Volunteer FAQs

What volunteer opportunities are available? We offer two core volunteer opportunities, both of which carry a year-long commitment.
  • Love Box Leaders: Individuals, families, or groups who provide monthly support to a local foster family with practical items, encouragement, and connection.

  • Dare to Dream Mentors: Volunteers who mentor youth (ages 11–22) in foster care, focusing on life skills, goal setting, and consistent encouragement.
If neither of those are the right fit, our Angel Allies are volunteers who assist a variety of capacities, such as serving on a committee, as an Office Angel, at events, and more!

Whether or not any of those are the right fit for you, one of the best ways is to get involved our Angel Alliance as a monthly donor! Our community of monthly sustainers receive monthly stories of impact showing how your support is making a real difference and invitations to exclusive events and experiences. Join the Angel Alliance here!

What is the time commitment? Both the Love Box and Dare to Dream programs require at least a one-year commitment, but we our hope is that the relationships last a lifetime! Over 88% of our volunteers renew when they reach one year!
  • Love Box: Generally 2–3 hours (or more) per month for monthly support for your matched family.
  • Dare to Dream: Approximately  2 hours bi-weekly with your matched youth, committing to consistency to build trust.

Is there a financial commitment? While there is no specific financial requirement, our volunteers do need to be able to drive to/from their matched family or youth and cover the cost of meetups and/or other support provided.

Love Box volunteers often provide practical items or meals. An average is $75 for the caregivers + $25 per child in the home per month, so for a family of four, the average would be $125. However, we encourage volunteers to work within their budget and partner with their community to gather needed items - recruit Love Box group members, share Amazon wishlists, etc!

Dare to Dream mentors are expected to cover any associated costs with a meetup. For instance - if the mentor takes their mentee out to eat or to a fitness class, they’d cover the cost of those activities.
What is the volunteer process?
  1. Attend an informational discovery session to learn about the programs
  2. Complete a volunteer application and background check.
  3. Complete your volunteer training to equip you for your role.
  4. Get matched with a family or youth based on fit and availability.

What are the requirements to volunteer?
  • Must be at least 22 years old for to be a Dare to Dream mentor or Love Box Leader.
    • For Dare to Dream, we prefer an 8+  year age gap between mentor and mentee.
  • Must be able to pass an in-depth background check and provide at least three references.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check (as well as have an up to date driver’s license and insurance).
  • Complete required training.
  • Have a heart for building consistent, intentional relationships.

Can I volunteer with my family or a group? Yes! Many Love Box groups are families, churches, or community groups who want to serve together to support a foster family. We ask that these groups would be maximum of 8-10 people with 2 designated leaders as we prioritize relational connection.

How do I get matched? Once approved, our team will match you with a family (Love Box) or youth (Dare to Dream) based on your preferences, location, and capacity, ensuring the best possible fit for a lasting relationship.
What training is provided? We offer training thorough onboarding, equipping you with trauma-informed practices, clear program expectations, and best practices for building relationships with families and youth in foster care. All volunteers also complete the Georgia Mandated Reporter training.

Why is consistency important? Children, youth, and families in foster care often experience instability. By showing up consistently, you help build trust, belonging, and relational permanency—core to our mission at Atlanta Angels.
How long is the onboarding process?Volunteers can typically expect the onboarding process (from application to match) to take around two months. That said, it varies greatly based on how quickly the volunteer submits all materials and completes training, as well as the availability of an appropriate match.

Can I be both a Love Box Leader and Dare to Dream Mentor? In order to build a solid relationship with the family/youth you’re matched with, and to avoid burnout as a volunteer, we only allow our volunteers to be matched in one program, with one family/youth at a time.

Which program has a higher need? While all of our programs benefit from dedicated volunteers, we currently see the highest need in two areas: Love Box volunteers, who provide support to foster families, and male mentors for our Dare to Dream program, which supports youth in  foster care. If you're considering where to make the most impact, these roles are a great place to start.

Is Atlanta Angels a good fit for court-orderded community service? No - we are not approved to sign off on court-mandated community service, and all of our volunteers must be able to pass a background check.
